Recently, I have seen some YTD returns and thought I would collate some of the more interesting ones into a dodgy table. The stand out performer is undoubtedly the Nikkei. Its amazing what you can do to an index when you attempt to do at least something to address inter generational economic problems.
From my perspective the interesting thing is how poorly our market has performed. If you back date the All Ords to 2010 we have no net gain in the index at all. We have effectively been going sideways for three year. Whilst many equity systems has been switched on for a few months the going has been tough for non diversified equity only portfolios.
I am not a macro investor by any sense of the word but I always find Hugh Hendry interesting.
Over the years there has developed a belief that people in more developed and richer countries were no happier than their counterparts in poorer less developed countries.
Turns out this is not true, it seems that the old adage that you can never be too rich, too good looking or too smart has a ring of truth to it.
