“Pain is more than one thing,” explains Dr. Jeffrey Mogil, the head of the Pain Genetics Lab at McGill University. It’s a sensation, like vision or touch; it’s an emotion, like anger or sadness; and it’s also a “drive state” that compels action, like hunger.
This is a neat little piece on what separates the elite from the ordinary. To me it seems like simple habituation – expose yourself to enough stress on a repeated basis and it becomes “normal” I think the same thing probably happens to traders who expose themselves continually to the uncertainty of markets. Do it for long enough and the uncertainty becomes tolerable whereas for ordinary traders the uncertainty is devastating to their psyche.
