Hi Chris, i found your comment interesting that you don’t believe you would ever see such a dramatic move in a fx market again that happened in eurchf. You don’t think this could happen in some of the other popular heavily traded currencies? I do trade forex mainly eurusd with stops but that probably would not have saved you if a similiar event happened. I think it would be a great article from you in commenting further on that extraordinary event. I know myself and other traders i know, are feeling apprenshive about forex.
Would appreciate your thoughts on this
thanks Tony
Whilst, I havent done the calculation my guess is that based upon the average daily volatility of the EUR/CHF that you wouldn’t expect to see this move anytime in tens of millions of trading periods. However, that is cold comfort to all those who were caught by this sort of move. With regard to moves of this size, without some sort of dramatic central bank intervention I still wouldn’t expect to see this sort of move in the remainder of my trading life. What it does do is cause one to consider the assumptions that underly your trading. For example in FX it was widely assumed that in FX trading that slippage was never a problem because the tremendous liquidity of the market would save you. Perhaps when using market makers (retail FX brokers) this assumption might not be true any more.
Hi Chris, could that event of the eurchf ever happen in other popular heavily traded currencies, for eg. the eurusd. I do trade forex and others i know who do too, and have made us apprehensive about getting involved in the forex market. Stops would not have saved you in another event like what recently occured. It would make a great future article to explain further after your comment of maybe not seeing another event like that
would appreciate your thoughts
thanks Tony
