I was lucky to have early experience dealing with Systems Analysts (now a defunct animal) to Manage the design of an early (1970’s) Australia Wide order inventory, etc system including the use of fibre optics (discovered for NBN by Labour in 2008). The success of the project came from ignoring all the intelligence advice about what staff needed, keep it simple, easy to learn and handle with focus on the basics – to keep all promises small and deliver few of the “nice-to-haves”. At the outset, there standard political brawl involving senior management – with demands a computer project should be run by the computer department. Amazingly, wisdom finally prevailed and it was managed as a Marketing Operations project (partly because we had fought for the budget).
Definitely start with a Simple System, promise little and deliver all what you promise.
