Can you guess what that subject is?
A study that involved 4,500 couples, came up with some fascinating results. Co-author, Dr Sonya Britt-Lutter said: “Arguments about money are the top predictor of divorce. It’s not children, in-laws or anything else. It’s money – for both men and women.”
The study controlled for income, debt and net worth. This is universal. It’s not just couples with less that argue about this more. These types of arguments happen at all levels.
Money arguments bring out the worst in people.
People who are stressed about money avoid the issue. During the heat of the argument, harsh language is common. Plus, the arguments last longer and are more intense compared to other topics. And… they also take longer to recover from.
The more arguments about money a couple has, the lower their relationship satisfaction.
So, worried whether your marriage will make it, or whether it will go up in flames?
Deal with your issues around money calmly. Make your money scripts and views explicit.
And now that you’re aware… for heck’s sake, tread carefully around this issue.
