MY NIECE WAS THREE at the time. A trip to the historical mansion, Ripponlea, seemed like a great way to share this sparkling Spring day.
Hand in hand, arms swinging, we ventured through the ornate metal entrance gate. A majestic peacock turned to face us, looked my niece directly in the eye, and I imperceptibly moved slightly in front of her… ready for a stoush.
Then, with a dignified wiggle, it lifted it’s glorious tail feathers, and in an instant, we both basked in its iridescent display of colour.
A moment captured in my memory.
My niece looked up at me in wonder, trying to express what she was thinking.
“Look!” she exclaimed.
“A rainbow duck!”
And indeed, in her mind, it was.
Somewhere along the line, we lost the awe and wonder we used to feel when we saw something new. So many of us have become stale and jaded, overlooking the beauty right in front of us. Distracted by the busy busyness of our lives.
