PS Not so well off folks can also be clueless about such things. Many years ago my recently divorced neighbour knocked on my door and asked me if I could show him how his new washing machine worked. He had gone straight from living at home where his mother did his washing to being married where his wife did his washing. As such his washing machine was an object he had never seen before and he regarded it with the same trepidation that a normal person would have if asked to disarm a nuclear weapon.
