The tram rattled and groaned.
I was coming home from the city where I’d met up with my son. Usually I’d drive.
This time though, the school insisted on the families coming in by train, tram or bus.
With me was my husband and our excited 11-year old.
I’d forgotten. Forgotten how exhausted people are after a full day’s work.
Forgotten the toll of long thankless days. Forgotten the irritation of the jostle. But right there in front of me was most people’s work-life reality… etched into the faces of the commuters.
Leaving for work when it’s dark. Getting home when it’s dark. Robbed of the daylight. Forced to miss the best hours of the day.
There’s a quote from One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest that refers to commuters as “half-life creatures”.
I wonder when those commuters realised their dreams were squashed under the weight of their dull reality.
Isn’t it time you broke away and did something for yourself? Something to give you life choices…
