A few years ago, when coaching a group of senior traders at a large US investment bank, one of the participants revealed to me that he was also a tournament poker player and was ranked in the world’s top 200 players. Curious to know more, I asked him what he felt gave him an edge as a poker player? Without flinching, he said ‘It’s about how I walk away: Win or lose, I must not overthink it, I must let-go of my thoughts, that way I am able to return to the next hand, or the tables the next day or week, unfazed from what just happened. Thus how I walk away is my edge’.
