OK….YOU’VE SUFFERED a huge loss.
What makes it worse is you know, at a deep core level, that you did this. You DID this. Your actions made this happen.
But I’ve been there.
I’ve been struggling for breath as the 50 foot waves sent me tumbling, fighting, unable to control what was happening. I’ve felt the shame. The shame that makes you want to stay under the water, even though you know you’ll run out of oxygen… because it’s quieter under the surface.
But rise you must. Rise and survive.
To begin with, it will seem like a new 50 foot wave will strike you every few minutes. That’s grief over what you consider to be an erased future.
You’re driven down to the bottom, then kick-off and it’s back to the relentlessness of your situation. Raw. Animal. Intent on survival, but not so sure you’ll actually make it.
Over time, you notice that the waves look more like 10 foot. Yes, they’re still there, threatening to drown you with feelings of helplessness, but there seems to be some hope. Some sunshine between the waves. Some light to bask in.
You develop strength.
You find your courage.
It directs you.
It compels you to find your inner core, and to face your fears.
You move forward, realising that you can win. You WILL win.
With a new maturity you face the onslaught.
Then… just like that… the waves are the size of a small current in a bathtub. Nothing to fear. Easy to overcome.
Yes, your memory of the relentless giant waves lives on. But now… you’re ready for them.
