ELIAS CANETTI IN ‘The Human Province’ states “One lives in the naïve notion that later there will be more room than in the entire past.”
We think we’ll live forever, and that we’ll always be the age we are right now.
We make the mistake thinking we have time.
Even though at an intellectual level we know we are finite… on a day to day basis, we drink, we smoke, we don’t exercise and don’t nurture our friendships… thinking that there’s always tomorrow.
So, how can you jolt yourself into action?
There’s some new research that says if you see yourself as 10 years older, you’ll make better decisions for your future today. It makes the future ‘you’ seem all the more real.
Quite confronting though… but worth a shot.
There are a few apps that can do this for you. I used Oldify.
To put my money where my mouth is, this is how I’ll look in 10 years:
Now, I don’t know how accurate this will turn out to be… but hang around for long enough and you’ll find out.
The idea is that the older ‘you’ must live with the decisions you’re making today, so if you want to nurture the older you… you must start today.
Quite confronting.
Makes it seem all the more real.
Try it… I dare you.
