Odds are that scandal would have played out differently in Vietnam, another nation struggling with misbehaving bankers.
The authoritarian Southeast Asian state doesn’t just send unscrupulous financiers to jail. Sometimes, it sends them to death row.
Amid a sweeping cleanup of its financial sector, Vietnam has sentenced three bankers to death in the past six months.

It is significant that the huge frauds that have been perpetrated in the financial sector in the west have at most attracted fines (Bernie Madoff is an exception) exacted upon the corporations which in effect make them simply a cost of doing business. Individuals responsible are rarely even named let alone charged or imprisoned. This gives a clear message that these people are above the law.
I live in Thailand and love the country but there is no question it is a mafia state. Nowadays the country is in a state of political paralysis because members of the elite put their own short term interests above any other consideration.
